Calculate lawn area and determine how many bags of grass seed and fertilizer you need based on coverage rates.
Lawn Coverage Formulas:
Lawn Area = Length x Width
Seed Bags = Area / Coverage per Bag
Fertilizer Bags = Area / Coverage per Bag
Typical seed coverage: 250-300 sq ft/lb for overseeding; 5,000 sq ft per standard fertilizer bag
Coverage rates vary by grass type. For overseeding an existing lawn, use about 3-4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. For a new lawn, use 6-8 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. Always check the seed bag label for the recommended rate.
Most standard lawn fertilizer bags cover 5,000 sq ft. Some premium slow-release bags cover up to 15,000 sq ft. Check the label for the coverage area and application rate.
For cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass), fall (late August through October) is best. For warm-season grasses (bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine), late spring through early summer is ideal.
Break the lawn into simple shapes (rectangles, triangles, circles). Calculate each section separately and add them together. For irregular shapes, multiply the length by the average width.
Overseeding is the process of spreading grass seed over an existing lawn to thicken it, fill in bare spots, and improve its overall appearance without fully tearing up the lawn.
Most lawns benefit from 3-4 fertilizer applications per year. Cool-season lawns are best fertilized in fall and spring. Warm-season lawns are typically fertilized in late spring through summer.
