Track your pregnancy weight gain against IOM guidelines based on your pre-pregnancy BMI. Understand how much weight you should gain for a healthy pregnancy.
IOM Recommended Total Weight Gain:
Underweight (BMI <18.5): 12.5-18 kg
Normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9): 11.5-16 kg
Overweight (BMI 25-29.9): 7-11.5 kg
Obese (BMI ≥30): 5-9 kg
Expected gain at any week = Total recommendation × (current week / 40)
Women with higher pre-pregnancy BMI already have more energy reserves. The IOM guidelines are designed to optimize outcomes for both mother and baby based on starting nutritional status.
Insufficient weight gain is associated with preterm birth and low birth weight. It is important to meet at least the minimum recommended gain for your BMI category.
Excess weight gain increases the risk of gestational diabetes, cesarean delivery, large-for-gestational-age babies, and difficulty losing weight after delivery.
Most women gain 1-2 kg in the first trimester and then about 0.5 kg per week in the second and third trimesters. The rate may slow in the final weeks before birth.
Yes. For twins, the IOM recommends 16.8-24.5 kg for normal weight women, 14.1-22.7 kg for overweight women, and 11.3-19.1 kg for obese women.
Weight gain includes the baby (about 3-4 kg), placenta (0.7 kg), amniotic fluid (0.8 kg), uterus (0.9 kg), breast tissue (0.9 kg), blood volume (1.4 kg), body fluids (1.8 kg), and maternal fat stores (2.7-4 kg).
