Calculate body fat percentage using the US Army DoD circumference method and check if you meet Army body composition standards by age and gender.
US Army Body Fat Formula (all measurements in inches):
Men: BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76
Women: BF% = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387
Max Body Fat Standards:
Men: 20% (17-20) / 22% (21-27) / 24% (28-39) / 26% (40+)
Women: 30% (17-20) / 32% (21-27) / 34% (28-39) / 36% (40+)
Army standards range from 20% maximum for men aged 17-20 up to 26% for men 40+. For women: 30% maximum at 17-20, up to 36% at 40+. Standards are more lenient with age to account for normal physiological changes.
The Army uses the circumference method: neck and waist measurements for men; neck, waist, and hip measurements for women. Measurements are taken with a tape measure at specific anatomical landmarks and entered into the DoD formula.
For men, the waist is measured at the navel. For women, the waist is measured at the narrowest point. The neck is measured just below the larynx (Adam's apple) for both sexes. The hip is measured at the greatest circumference for women.
Soldiers who exceed body fat standards are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) and given 6 months to meet the standard. Continued failure can result in denial of promotion or separation from service.
The circumference method has an accuracy of approximately ±3-4 percentage points compared to lab methods like DEXA scanning. It is designed for consistency and field practicality rather than precision. Results depend heavily on correct measurement technique.
